About me, your Online English Tutor

I started teaching an imaginary class at the age of 5. Twenty years later, I started my first teaching job, and continue to work with students teaching English lessons alongside my doctoral research and writing.

After graduating with a First Class degree in English Literature and working in the travel industry, I trained as an English teacher and took up my first teaching post in 1998.  Thereafter, I taught in five secondary schools delivering English Language and Literature at Key Stage 3, and GCSE, A Level and International Baccalaureate specifications to UK and international students.

During this time, I worked as an examiner and took on many positions of responsibility including Head of Department and Deputy Housemistress.

I held pastoral responsibilities for choristers, taught additional classes for Oxbridge entrants and managed whole-school provision for Gifted and Talented students.  As a Sixth Form tutor, I prepared students for UCAS applications; I also took part in the planning and delivery of Gold Duke of Edinburgh expeditions on foot and by canoe.

In 2022, I returned to university for my MA and PhD and I tutor students alongside my academic research and university commitments. With the company of our Labrador, Bruno, I work in person and online from my home classroom in Kendal, Cumbria.

One of the great joys of my professional life is my students’ energy, humour and creativity: it is an absolute pleasure to develop their confidence and potential. If, however, I am not at my desk or in the university library, then I will be gardening or walking beside the River Kent looking for signs of our resident otters.  Further afield, I take every opportunity to explore lakes, tarns and rivers on my paddleboard and we spend time each year on the west coast of Scotland in tents, canoes and cottages - with the occasional night in our trusty van.
